Friday 23rd January

This morning Josh had physio as usual before his surgery. His temperature was a bit up so there were some concerns about doing the surgery because of his temperature being a bit up. The anaesthetist came down to see him and checked his chest and said he thought that his temp may have been elevated because of a slight urine infection or an impending lag infection. Or possibly it is just a fluctuating temp. They said they’d give him some prophylactic antibiotics during the surgery.
Josh went to theatre about 9:20am by which time Polly and Imogen had woken up and came to say goodbye and good luck. Jude and the girls, Kath and her girls and Marian and the boys went to QEII Park and Blair to get coffee with Hugh.
About 12:30 the theatre rang to say Josh was ready to go back. He was in his room by 12:45 with an O2 mask, a plastic collar and a drain in his neck. He was feeling okay but very tired. Tracy came and did some more physio and took the mask off him.
Rick Ackland came in and said the surgery had gone well and that Josh would be beginning to sit up soon. He took the collar off since Josh is lying in bed. He mentioned a bone density study that Josh may want to be part of.
Nana Joan texted to see how things went. A card came from Richard and Fiona sent a postcard. Emails came from Michael and Alice, Cara and Lisa, Anne Brodie, Nicki from Auckland on Blair’s computer.
Adrian and Kath went home but both will be back next week.
Josh rang Fiona and Adam to say hello and give them some more info about what had happened. Murray rang and passed on his best. D also rang Josh.
Josh had a head massage for the first time. Thank goodness the traction frame has gone from his head. He has some sores on the sides of his head from the frame and they have put some silver ointment on them. Josh has a lot of sand in his hair and Jude managed to sprinkle loads of sand from his hair on to his pillow. The nurse helped brush Josh’s teeth and Jude was too slow with the straw and Josh ended up swallowing toothpaste – yuck!!
