Tuesday 20th January

Josh got to drink some watered down orange juice today YIPPEE! As the day went on he had some more orange juice and ate some disgusting looking green jelly. Josh got his naso-gastric tube out which was a relief but not as much of a help with his blocked nose as he’d hoped. We suspect it may be the effects of gravity since his head is on a bit of an angle. He had his IV fluids disconnected as he is now drinking enough Each day physios come twice to massage his arms doing passive movements and once a day they do passive movements to his legs. They only move his legs 90 degrees while his spine is still unstable. Kath arrived YIPPEE!! Marian popped in today and brought some sunflowers. She and Hugh and the boys were in Christchurch for a few days. Jude and Adrian moved from the yucky hostel to a wee unit closer to the spinal unit. Everyone will be able to stay there when they’re up from Dunedin. Kate Strack dropped in with some cheese and plums. Josh was asleep. The registrar talked Jude and Adrian through the x-rays and the MRI etc. C5 vertebra is broken and a piece of bone (tamina) at the posterior has broken off. The vertebra has shifted across the spinal column. On Friday they will go in through his throat to repair and stabilise the spine. This will involve putting in a metal H bracket screwed onto C4 and C6 and there will be a bone graft to C5 at the front and remove the piece of loose bone. This will stabilise the posterior aspect of C5. The one will come from Josh’s hip. Josh spoke to Blair and the girls on the phone. He also spoke to Fiona. Genevieve and Mary rang and gave their best. Genevieve will feed Jude’s cats while the girls are away and said she’ll come up when everyone wants her to. Camille and Ralph sent a text to Josh’s phone and a food basket to Blair. Sarah and Rob also took a food parcel round to the girls. The girls spent the day playing play station and watching movies because it was a stink day in Dunedin. Josh got a TV installed above his bed. His social worker talked about accommodation for the family, WINZ assistance, psych support and Jude becoming power of attorney since he can’t sign.
